Bio
Helen Bartels was born in the Netherlands in a former concentration camp where the Dutch used to house former soldiers of their colonial army in the Dutch East-Indies. The soldiers and their families, among them her parents, were brought to the Netherlands because of fear of repercussions from the new rulers when the colony became the independent country of Indonesia. She grew up in a town known for its shoe (and leather) industry and agriculture. She attended university and emerged with a degree in Sociology, with a focus on Mass Communications and Public Relations. Already as a young adult, she was actively volunteering in her community and served in committees. During the course of her professional career, she has worked in different fields ranging from insurance companies, law offices, Human Resources to Quality Management. She was swept off her feet by her husband who enticed her to move to Arizona. She has now lived for over 20 years in quaint Clarkdale, her home away from home, where she has adapted well (not surprisingly, having moved in different cultures) to her ‘new’ life. From the mid-nineties to mid-2000s, she worked for Yavapai College as a Programs Office Manager. Since 2007, she has been employed at the City of Cottonwood in a few different positions and presently as their Budget Analyst. Over the years, she has been volunteering her knowledge and experience helping others, especially with grant writing, translations, film making and editing, and research in general. She is grateful to have been accepted to join on this “once in a lifetime leadership journey with Project Centrl” as Ms. Cheryle Goar has stated in her introduction letter to the program. Through Project Centrl’s program, Helen wishes to build on and strengthen her leadership competencies and specifically develop skills that are especially needed in exercising rural leadership. During her time off, Helen indulges in her passion for travel to exotic destinations such as The Baltic States, Tahiti, Fiji, Belize, Antarctica, and Upstate New York to meet people of different cultures. She enjoys nature while walking and hiking, and relishes reading any genre of books from thriller novels to adventure and ethnographies. She loves visiting her family back home and having a good time with friends. Last but not least, she has a penchant for home brewing that is very much appreciated by her husband who thoroughly enjoys drinking her brews as she makes them especially for him. In turn, he pampers her with fancy breakfasts and outlandish gifts.
