Bio
James Walter is a senior meteorologist with the Salt River Project (SRP), a community-based not-for-profit water and power utility headquartered in Tempe, AZ. His interest in the weather began at a young age when a severe thunderstorm in the late 1970’s struck his north Phoenix neighborhood producing extensive wind and flood damage. This interest carried through his education, with a B.S. and M.A. in meteorology and climatology from Arizona State University. As a meteorologist with 17-years of experience in SRP’s Surface Water Resources group, James uses his expertise in meteorology and climatology to help manage a system of seven reservoirs that provide 40% of the greater Phoenix metropolitan area’s water supply. His responsibilities include storm event forecasting for the Salt and Verde watersheds, watershed and snowpack condition assessment, and both short-term and seasonal runoff forecasting. In addition he provides critical weather information to support power operations to the 1,000,000 customers serviced by SRP. He has shared his fascination of the weather with dozens of meteorology graduate students and many other weather wonks through leadership in SRP’s weather balloon program and educational outreach opportunities. Some of his passions outside of meteorology include frequenting the great outdoors in his native state of Arizona as well as spending time with his beautiful wife and three children.
