Travel to Mt. Graham International Observatory:

    Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope

    Heinrich Hertz Submillimeter Telescope

    Large Binocular Telescope

The visits feature a 40-mile trip to the MGIO site near the summit of scenic Mt. Graham and focus on the mountain’s rich history, geology, and diversity of life. The cool mountain air and a delicious sack lunch at the U.S. Forest Service’s Columbine Visitor’s Center will energize you for the guided walk through these three Observatory facilities.

Although the EAC and the MGIO make every effort to make sure the visits are safe and comfortable, all interested parties are STRONGLY WARNED that the MGIO facilities are at extremely high altitude (10,500 ft. / 3,200m).

    • The drive has several curves and hairpin turns, with no guard rails.
    • If you get car sick you will definitely need to bring some Dramamine for nausea.
    • Participants must be able to easily get in and out of a van several times.
    • Participants must be able to walk moderate distances, climb several sets of stairs, and also includes standing in place for extended periods of time at these altitudes.
    • The observatories require us to wear close-toed walking shoes for safety.
    • The temperature is approximately 30 degrees cooler, therefore a light jacket is recommended.
    • We CANNOT take anyone under the age of 8 years old.
    • There is NO SMOKING anywhere in the vans, in the buildings, or on the mountain.
    • We don't have a gift shop or souvenirs, so don't forget to bring your camera!

The CENTRL Alumni Committee is making this entire experience available complimentary to CENTRL Alumni, Class 28 participants, potential applicants and friends / family.  However, advanced registration is required and since their is a cost, cancellations need to be made before Friday 9/20. There is a 40 person maximum participation for this CRC - so register soon!
