Bio
My name is Ashley Schimke. I am Arizona-born and raised with extended family based in California, Washington, South Dakota, Nebraska, Indiana, and Missouri. I studied business and nutrition at Arizona State University. I have worked for the Arizona Department of Education’s Health and Nutrition Services Division for nearly twelve years. Earlier in my career, my position initiated Arizona’s first coordinated effort to establish and strengthen the capacity of school professionals that wanted to purchase local food for use within USDA Child Nutrition Programs with reinforcing activities that included food education and edible school gardens. Together each activity has demonstrated improvement in student behaviors that aid in their willingness to try and consume whole foods. A career highlight in this work, was seeing Arizona schools spend nearly $2 million on Arizona grown fresh fruits and vegetables in the 2018-2019 school year through a program called the USDA Department of Defense Fresh Produce Program.Today my work is focused on special projects that help to propel School Food Professionals on their journey to build back from the COVID-19 pandemic by increasing access to whole foods and service of scratch-cooked and culturally inclusive meals. Among my professional work, I am also an avid volunteer and believe in the work of the Arizona Center for Rural Leadership, the University of Arizona Master Gardener Program and Blue Watermelon Project. Each organization is important to me and supports my interests in developing community, aiding in the access of healthy foods in under-resourced populations, and efforts that strengthen Arizona’s smaller, rural, and tribal communities.
