Hilario Tanakeyowma is a proud lifetime resident of Arizona and an enrolled member of the Hopi Tribe. He grew up in Flagstaff and spent many summers in Camp Verde and the Hopi reservation, which has profoundly influenced his commitment to rural communities. With an impressive 30-year career in law enforcement, Hilario Tanakeyowma began his journey at the Hopi Tribe in 1994 and has continuously demonstrated his leadership and expertise.

His time with the Gila River Police Department saw him rise through the ranks, excelling in supervisory roles across patrol, traffic, investigations, and various other critical duties. He is a skilled educator, having taught extensively in key areas such as investigation, evidence collection, and tactical driving.

Upon joining the Quartzsite Police Department, Hilario Tanakeyowma leveraged his administrative skills to secure multiple grants, modernizing the agency and enhancing its operational capabilities. In 2022, he was appointed Chief of Police of the Tonto Apache Police Department, where he has successfully elevated the agency’s professionalism and effectiveness.

Chief Tanakeyowma is steadfast in his commitment to cultivating capable police officers and fostering organizational growth to better serve our communities. He serves as the President of the 554 Foundation and is an active participant in the Arizona Missing and Murdered Indigenous Task Force.

Outside of his professional achievements, Chief Tanakeyowma enjoys hunting, fishing, and outdoor adventures. He has a profound interest in history and diverse cultures from around the world. He currently resides in Payson, AZ, with his wife and is the proud father of three adult children living in the Phoenix Metro area.
